Saturday Round-Up: Ferns Win for Mark Kenneally

Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally was the winner of the Mick Murphy 4-Mile hosted by Sliabh Buidhe Rovers in Ferns, Co Wexford  on Saturday evening.

Kenneally was chased  early on by  Freddie Keron Sittuk, the Kenyan now (apparently) running with Raheny Shamrock and Sean Hehir  of Rathfarnham WSAF. This pair, both with hard races in their legs from a week earlier, then battled it out for second place, with Keron getting the edge. In the women’s race,  Kilmore’s Jackie Carthy was a clear winner from Martina O’Dwyer of Carrick-on-Suir.

Earlier, Clonliffe running machine Gary O’Hanlon had travelled to the midlands  where he won the Tullamore Harriers 50th Anniversary Half Marathon in 72 mins 50 secs – not bad for a man who finished second in the Longford Marathon last week (his sixth marathon this year). Gary had warmed up for the race by winning the Kilkerly Round the Block 4 Miler in his native Louth the night before.

Ferbane’s Paul Buckley was a comfortable second place ahead of Stephen McKeigue. First woman was Anne Marie McGlynn of Lifford in 81 mins 23 secs, with Clonmel’s Angela McCann two minutes behind in second place and also first over 40. First woman over 50 was  Susan Waterstone of Civil Service Harriers. In a racing comeback, Tullamore’s Ann Carroll, a previous winner of the British and Irish Masters’ Cross-Country International, was second over 50.

* In Strandhill, Co Sligo, Clonliffe’s Brian MacMahon won  the Warriors Run 15k in 52 mins 49 secs. Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers was first woman, winning by over six minutes from the chasers.

*Dunboyne and Dunshaughlin shared most of the spoils at the Tara 5km in Co Meath on Friday evening. Dunboyne’s Rory Kavanagh won the race in 16 mins 7 secs with Colm O’Connell of Raheny Shamrock in second place, With three finishers in the top six, Dunboyne took the team title ahead of Dunshaughlin who has two finishers in the top six. Raheny’s Lorraine Manning was first woman, with Na Fianna,  consisting of Mary Hanley, Imelda Clarke and Bridget Clarke, first team.

* Philip Harty  of West Waterford  narrowly beat Bantry’s Alan O’Shea  to win the Genzyme Charity 5km in Co Waterford. Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane was first woman.

* Ex-Irish international Paul McKee of Beechmount won the M35 100m at the Northern Ireland Masters Track and Field Championships at the Mary Peters track in Belfast.

McKee was timed at 11.46; Roger Sexton of North Down won the M40 title with a time of 11.85. McKee also won the 200m in 23.11 with Sexton 2nd and 1st M40 in 23.94. From Dublin clubs, Liam Lister of Crusaders won the M55 100m and was 2nd 200m and shot, while Clonliffe’s Matt Slattery was first in the M60 100m, also winning the 400m, where Sligo’s John McDermott was 1st M65, also winning the 400m hurdles.
