Round-Up: Clohisey and Shaughnessy tops at The Lakes 10km

Raheny’s Mick Clohisey and Laura Shaughnessy of DSD were the winners at  The Lakes 10km on a hilly course around Blessington, Co Wicklow. Clohisey was out on his own in the men’s race, finishing with over three minutes to spare in 30 mins 50 secs.  Shaughnessy, back on the roads after a summer break, was fourth overall in a competitive time of 34 mins 35 secs.

AT THE GREAT NORTH RUN  in Newcastle, Stephen Scullion ran a personal best half marathon time of 65 mins 52 secs to finish 14th, while Newcastle and District’s Eoghan Totten   was also in PB running form, finishing 19th  in  67:21. AFTER HIS EFFORTS yesterday in counties Kildare and Louth, Freddy Sittuk surely deserved a long lie in this morning. He started his day in Moone, Co Kildare, where he won the Tony O’Donoghue 10km in 32 mins 3 secs. Later in the day, he travelled to Dromiskin in Co Louth where he came out on top in the well-supported local 5km.  And then this  morning,  there was no lie-in for Freddy when he headed for Co Meath to take victory in the Rathoath 5km – a hat trick of wins in two days!  First woman at the Moone 10k was Kilmore’s Fiona Kehoe. In Dromiskin, the evergreen Rose Lambe of Carrick Aces was the overall  women’s winner – and first W50.

DOWN MUNSTER WAY,  Mark Hanarahan of Leevale won the John Buckley 10-Mile in Cork with a sub- 50 minute time.  In Limerick, Carol Finn of Leevale  was first woman at the Doon 10km with brother Denis  first of the men. And finally, at the Tipperary County  10-Mile Road Championships, the winners were Stuart Maloney  and Madeline Loughnane.

OTHER SPORTS: Close to  500 hardy souls turned out for yesterday’s 98th Dublin City Liffey Swim over a 2.2km course  from Rory O’Moore Bridge to North Wall Quay in front of the Customs House. Winners were Colin Monaghan  in the men’s swim in 36 mins (handicap 30 secs) and Anne Marie Bourke  in the women’s race in 33 mins 48 secs  (2 minute handicap.)

Abroad, Jenny Egan of  the Salmon Leap club in Leixlip produced the race of her life to finished third at the World Marathon Canoe Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Egan was part of a group of three that broke away from the rest of the field on the sixth of seven and a half laps in the women’s 26.2km race. Lani Belcher,  the Australian who competes for GB sprinted away for  the gold in a time of 2 hrs 5 mins 4 secs. Vanda Kiszli of Hungary was six second behind for silver and Egan 29 secs behind again for bronze.  Earlier this season, Egan won gold and bronze in the K1 5,000 at canoe sprint World Cup events.
Rónán Ó Foghladha took fifth in the men’s junior K1; Barry Watkins was 19th and Peter Egan 24th in the men’s senior race won by the legendary Hank McGregor, who competed in last year’s Liffey Descent.
