EYOF: Bronze for Williams and Jumbo-Gula

Shercock’s Jade Williams threw 58.62m to finish third in the 3kg hammer at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Gyor, Hungary. In the heats, Williams had thrown a massive personal best of 61.08m. Going into the competition, her best ever throw was 57.92m.

On a great day for the Irish, Patience Jumbo-Gula of St Gerard’s Dundalk took a second athletics bronze for Ireland in the 100m.  The Dundalk sprinter finished third in a time of 11.59 secs; in the semi-finals, she had run 11.74 secs after breaking 12 seconds for the first time in the heats with a time of 11.94 secs.

Also in action for Ireland was Sean Carolan of Nenagh Olympic who produced a personal best of 6.79m to book his place in tomorrow’s long jump final. In the girls’ 800m, Molly Brown of MSB was unfortunate not to qualify for the final from her 800m semi final, while in the long jump Ruby Millet of St Abban’s jumped 5.37m to finished fifth in her qualification round.

Ireland’s first medal of the festival came from the sport of cycling when Lara Gillespie from Enniskerry finished second in the girl’s cycling time trial. Gillespie is also an athlete, competing with Blackrock AC and with her school Wesley College.
