A victory for Brian Gregan in the 400m proved the highlight of today’s competition at the European Team Track and Field Championships League 1 in Vaasa, Finland.
Gregan was a comfortable winner of the race in 45.83 secs. Second was Batuhan Altintas of Turkey with Belgium’s Dylan Borlee third. In the women’ s 100m, Amy Foster came home second behind Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambutji and later helped the Irish team to second overall in the 4x100m relay; they won their heat beating Belgium.
There was disappointment for Thomas Barr in the 400m hurdles where he finished fifth in a race that would have graced any world championships. Winner was current wunderkind Karsten Warholm of Norway in a championships record time of 48.46 secs. Former world and Olympic champion Yasmani Copello, who is Cuban but runs in Turkish colours, was second, Switzerland’s Kariem Hussein third, Rasmus Magi of Estonia fourth and then Barr. All five broke 50 seconds.
Team newcomers Shona Heaslip, fourth in the 3000m, and 17-year-old Ryan Carty Walsh in the high jump both notched up personal bests. Overall, Ireland lie seventh of the twelve teams competing.
