Elizabeth Morland of Cushinstown AC had broken her own Irish record with a score of 5,669 points at the VII Meeting Internacional Arona Prubas Combinadas in Tenerife.
Morland set her record of 5,545 points at last year’s National Championships in Santry when aged just 18. She by-passed this year’s championships in favour of Terenife, where her big points came in the hurdles and high jump. She also produced the best javelin throw of the day. Her score qualifies her for the European U23 Championships in Poland next month.
Peter Glass amassed a total of 7,120 points in the men’s decathlon, with his big points coming from the hurdles, 100m and pole vault. Glass, aged 29, who recently signed up to Letterkenny AC, is chasing Commonwealth Games qualification. He lies third on the all-time Irish list with a score of 7,510 from 2013. The Irish record of 7,882 points, set by Carlos O’Connell, dates back to 1988 (a few months after Peter was born…).
IN CALIFORNIA, Coin Quirke had a 57.65 throw in the discus.
