Ann-Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny won today’s VHI Women’s Mini Marathon 10km – a race every ambitious female athlete in the country wants to win at least once. McGlynn had finished second in 2015 and she was determined to go one better this time.
On a perfect day for distance running, her time of 33 min 55 saw her come home half a minute clear of Laura Shaughnessy, a member of the race’s organising club Dundrum South Dublin.
McGlynn, who is in super shape at the moment after running a personal best time of 33:16.73 for 10,000m only a few weeks ago, forced the pace from the start of the race. Only Shaughnessy, also in pretty good form, attempted to stay with her. Until 4km at the UCD flyover the pair were together, although McGlynn had a slight advantage. On the journey back into town, she began to pull away and after that there was no catching her. Finishing third in 34.54 was Catherina Mullen from the Metro St Brigid’s club, who is originally from Cavan and named for the great Catherina McKiernan.
Last year’s winner Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane AC in Co Tipperary finished fourth, with another previous winner Linda Byrne of DSD also in the top ten. Among those spotted out on the road were winners from the early days of this great event including Christine Kennedy of Galway City Harriers. Kennedy won the mini marathon in 1990, having finished ninth in 1985 at the start of her running career. Today, she was slugging it out with Nuala Reilly of Drogheda and District and DSD’s Maxine Jones in the W60 age group and came home 42nd in 41.34. Maxine finished in 44.41 and Nuala in 45. 15
Also in action was Rose Lambe of Carrick Aces, who won the mini marathon in 1993 and finished third for the four years after that. She finished 18th in 38.40 – and won the W55 age group by some way. Finishing 12th in 37.19 was the 2008 winner Annette Kealy of Raheny Shamrock, who was first in the W45 category this year. Judging from the running vests on display, virtually every club in the country was well represented among the 33,000 women who had signed up for the race.
Winner in the visually impaired category was ultra running specialist Sinead Kane from Youghal. She was closely followed by Paralympian Catherine Walsh of Fingal Tri Club, who finished (by her own estimate) in a “tiny” pb of 47 mins 50 secs. As well as her many wins in the mini marathon, Walsh has won medals at the Paralympic Games in both athletics and cycling. In Rio, she competed in the triathlon. Her guide yesterday was triathlon coach Elena Maslova.
This year’s event had seen a new course, running in reverse order to the course of recent years. Next year will see another welcome change when, like the Dublin Marathon, the race reverts to a Sunday – the date for your diary is Sunday June 3. This, it is hoped, will bring in more runners from the North and from overseas, as has happened with the Dublin Marathon. Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com
