Round-Up: Leon Reid runs 10.26 secs at Ton le Gaoithe. Mitchell 15:50 for 5000m at BMC. Leinster team for CSIT

Menapian’s Leon Reid dominated both the 100m and 200m races at today’s wind-assisted (mostly) Ton le Gaoithe track and field meet in Waterford. In the 100m, Reid ran two races, clocking 10.27 secs in the first with an assisting wind of 2.9 and 10.26 secs in the second with the help of a +4 wind. In the 200m, with little wind assistance, he was timed at 21.08 secs.
Fastest of the women in the 100m were Niamh Whelan of Ferrybank and Bandon’s Joan Healy who both ran times of 11.63 secs although in different races, both of them with legal winds. With an assisting wind of +2.9, Whelan also clocked a time of 24.21 secs in the 200m
Dooneen’s Lily Ann O’Hora clocked a time of 13.93 secs in the 100m hurdles. Fastest of the men in the 110m hurdles was Matt Behan of Crusaders with 14.25 secs. In the men’s javelin both Stephen Rice and Alan Gunning went over 60 metres. The Irish junior 4x100m men’s and women’s teams clocked European U20 standards running 41.20 secs and 46.09 secs respectively

EMMA MITCHELL OF QUB set a new Northern Ireland record of 15 mins 50.55 secs for the 5000m at the British Milers Club Grand Prix meet in Solihull.  The time took almost three seconds off Duffy’s 1996 mark of 15:53.47.Mitchell will now attempt to get under the Northern Ireland  consideration mark of 15 mins 39 secs for next year’s Commonweatlh Games in Queensland, Australia.

Unfortunately Kerry O’Flaherty of Newcastle ended up in A and E after tearing her calf muscle with 1800m to go in the race. She still finished in 16:32.56 for seventh place. Behind her was Ciara Durkan of Skerries AC who finished 10th in 16:60.03. Race winner was Louise Small of Aldershot, Farnham and District in 15: 42.27.

In the 1500m A race, Raheny’s Kieran Kelly battled all the way to finish second in 3:44.42 – just a second off his PB. In the D race, St Coca’s Kevin Kelly was also second in 3:46.66. Finishing third in the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 5:49.11 was Clonliffe’s Jayme Rossiter.

There were four European U20 standards. In the men’s 1500m, Bantry’s Darragh McElhinney ran 3:49.32, knocking ten seconds off his previous best. In the same race, Charlie O’Donovan, aged 17, from Leevale finished on his heels with a time of 3:39.79 while in the women’s 1500m, Jodie McCann of DSD ran 4:26.83. In the 800m, Alex O’Neill of St Cronan’s clocked a qualifying mark of   2:09.53.

* In Florida, Adam McMullen of Crusaders recorded 7.85m for the long jump – a personal best and Commonwealth Games qualifying mark for the Northern Ireland athlete.
