Race regular John Coghlan came out on top again at today’s St Patrick’s Festival 5km in Dublin.
Coghlan, whose father Eamonn won the first edition of this race back in the 1980s, negotiated the twisting course and its ten corners in a time of 15 mins 12 secs. In the battle for second place, Cathal Doyle of Clonliffe just held off Raheny’s Eoin Strutt; the pair are rivals since their school days.
Winning the women’s race was Donore’s Barbara Cleary, who has hit a rich seam of form, in 17 mins 5 secs. Just ten seconds adrift was Catherina McKiernan; the pair are both masters. Third and first senior athlete was Fiona Kehoe of Kilmore.
Raheny made it a team double beating DSD in the men’s race and Sli Cualann in the women’s. Of the 1,227 who completed the race, the 728 women by some way outnumbered the 484 men and 15 “others”. Brilliant turn-out also of younger runners; 55 in the junior girls alone, with the Sli Cualann vest particularly noticeable. A few pics at www.flickr.com; more at www.lindie.zenfolio.com.
KEVIN SEAWARD, of St Malachy’s in Belfast though running for Cardiff AC, clocked a time of 65 mins 38 secs for fifth place at the Reading Half Marathon in England. Stephen Scullion, running for Aldershot Farnham and District, 16th, and Kevin Dooney of Raheny, 17th, were both given a time of 68.17. Liam Brady was 28th in 69.57. Mountain running international Sarah McCormack, running for Ambleside, finished in 78. 22. Race winner was Andy Vernon of Aldershot Farnham and District in 63.08.
WHEELCHAIR RACER Patrick Monahan from Le Cheile AC knocked almost three minutes off his time of last year when he finished fourth at the Lisbon Half Marathon in 46 mins 29 secs. Winner was Britain’s David Weir in 42:23. Both are among the elite for the London Marathon on April 23.
LAURA SHAUGHNESSY of DSD beat all the men to win the Craughwell 10-mile in Co Galway. Shaughnessy tucked in behind the leading men early on before making her break and coming home a clear winner in 58 mins 1 sec. Second was John Whiriskey of South Galway AC in 58.54, while third place was Greg Lundon (also South Galway) in 59.06.
