Rio-bound steeplechaser Sara Treacy of Dunboyne had the best best possible send-off when she ran a personal best 9 mins 30.41 secs to finish sixth in the 3000m steeplechase at the London Anniversary Games today.
It was her first time under 9 mins 40 secs and puts her third on the all-time Irish rankings behind Roisin McGettigan who ran 9:28.29 in 2007 and fellow Wicklow woman Fionnuala McCormack with 9:37.60 in 2011.
Locally, the 400m races proved the highlight of the Glo Health National Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Tullamore. A clear winner of the M17 race was Tony Odubote of Ennis Track. Winning the W19 title by a clear margin was Nicole King of GCH in 56.81 secs. A lot closer was the W18 race, where Katie Magee of DSD only caught Niamh Malone of Monaghan Phoenix within sight of the line. Magee’s time was 57.97 secs; Malone was timed at 58.09 secs, with Ellie O’Toole of Newbridge third in 58.90 secs.
In the W15 shot, Ciara Sheehy of Liscarroll was the winner with a 13.93m effort. This broke Michaela Walsh’s championships record of 13.87m. Winning the M17 high jump was Ben Donovan of Abbey Striders who soared over the bar a 1.90m. In the M16 hammer (4kg), Nenagh’s Ben Naughton came out on top with a 50.60m throw. An encouraging number of girls were competing in the pole vault, with Sarah Derham of Lusk taking the W18 title when she successfully cleared 3.10m. Tomorrow is the final day of the championships. AT THE WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS in Bydgoszcz, Poland, the Irish quartet finished a brilliant 5th in the women’s 4 x 100m setting a new Irish U20 record of 44.82 secs. Making up the team were Molly Scott of St LOT, Newport’s Sharlene Mawdsley, Gina Akpe-Moses of the Blackrock club in Louth and Emerald’s Ciara Neville. The race was won by the USA in 43.69 secs.
