Two thrilling 400m races brought Santry to its feet on the second day of the Glo Health National Track and Field Championships today.
First up were the women where the defending champion Sinead Denny of DSD just got to the line ahead of Bandon’s Phil Healy. Her time was 53.64 secs; Healy clocked 53.78 secs and Ciara McCallion of Clonliffe 54.48 secs for third place. In all, seven of the eight finalists ran times of under 56 seconds.
So what’s next for Denny? “I’m going to the Europeans!” she said.
The men’s race saw a blanket finish with Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan running his best race and his fastest time of the season to win in 46. 28 secs. Second was Craig Lynch of Shercock in 46.40 secs. Many times previous champion David Gillick of DSD continued his comeback to finish an impressive third in 46.44 secs.
All three were inside the European Championships B time of 46.70 secs – as was fourth placed Richard Morrissey of Crusaders. With six of the eight finishers under 47 seconds, the plan to send a 4x 400m team to the Olympics is very much back on track after a few uncertain weeks.
In other races, Michelle Finn of Leevale clocked a season’s best and championships record time of 9: 46.81 to win the women’s steeplechase. Kerry O’Flaherty of Newcastle AC, chasing the European time of 9:55, made much of the early running, but faded to finish in 9:58.81.
Dunboyne’s Sara Treacy, the third Irish ‘chaser bound for the Olympics, already has a fast time for the event in the bag and she opted to run the 1500m, which she had won last year. In a tactical race, she finished second behind UCD’s Ciara Mageean who clocked a time of 4:24.33. Treacy finished in 4:26.10, with Lisburn’s Kelly Neely third in 4:27.58.
Winning the men’s 1500m in 4:01.19 was John Travers of Donore; a close second was Eoin Everard of Kilkenny in 4:01.32.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD was in a class of her own in the women’s 800m, which she won in 2:04.72. A distant second was Leevale’s Louise Shanahan in 2:10.07. A lot closer was the men’s race, where Mark English of UCD just edged it in a time of 1:51.48. Hot on his heels were Irish-American Declan Murray of Clonliffe in 1:51.70, Karl Griffin of UCD in 1:51.83 and Raheny’s Kieran Kelly in 1:52.19.
No problems for Thomas Barr of Ferrybank in the 400m hurdles, which he won in a good time of 50.28 secs.Winning the battle for second place was Jason Harvey of Crusaders in 51.30. In the 110m hurdles, Ben Reynolds of North Down underlined his recent good form winning in 13.89 secs.
Over 100m, Jason Smyth of City of Derry clocked 10.71 secs to beat Jonathan Browning of Ballymena and Antrim for the men’s title, while Amy Foster of City of Lisburn regained the women’s title she last won in 2014, winning in 11.83 secs. Second was the 200m champion Niamh Whelan of Ferrybank in 11.92s ecs.
Biggest winner of the weekend was Galway’s Sean Breathnach who made it a hat trick of throws victories. He began by winning the 56lb for height yesterday and today added the 56lb for distance and his specialist shot putt where his best effort of 17.34m gave him an easy victory. Breathnach also finished second in the discus.
