Paul Pollock finished 14th in the World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff. Despite the windy, wet conditions, Pollock clocked an excellent time of 62 mins 46 secs and was second European.
Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor, the defending champion, won the race in 59:10, with Britain’s Mo Farah third in 59:59.
Pollock ‘s time showed that he is in good form for next month’s London Marathon where he hopes to nail down a qualification time for the Rio Olympics. Behind him, Thomas Frazier, who will also run the London Marathon, finished 41st in a personal best 65:20. Kevin Seaward was 42nd in 65:23 and Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu 50th in 66:30; Sean Hehir dropped out just after halfway. The team finished seventh.
In the women’s race Leevale’s Lizzie Lee finished 52nd in 75:36. Winner was Kenya’s Peres Jechirir in 67:31.
WINNING THE Maurice Mullins Wicklow Way Ultra 51km from Glencullen to Ballinastoe and back was Eoin Lennon of Carnethy AC in Wales. Seconds was SBR’s Tom Hogan, whose wife Dena was first woman. Among those finishing the race, held in trying conditions with heavy rain showers, wind and hail, was Mary Nolan Hickey first woman winner of this race many, many years ago and first person male or female over 60. In the one-way 25.5km trail race Killian Mooney of DSD beat Rathfarnham’s Brian Furey. Clonliffe’s Sarah McCormack was eighth overall and first woman for a second year. GIDEON KIMOSOP and Laura Graham were the winners of the Spar Omagh Half Marathon, with over 1,500 finishing. Tallaght’s Thomas Fitzpatrick made a welcome return to racing at the Fr Murphy 10km in Kildalkey Co Meath His time of 31 mins 33 secs saw him beating Eoin Callaghan of Star of the Sea by over a minute. First women was Caitriona O’Brien of Bohermeen. Winners of the team prizes were the Fr Murphy men and the Bohermeen women.
