Ciara Hickey of Brothers Pearse, running her first ever cross-country race won the women 3km at the Dublin Masters Cross-County held in St Anne’s Park in trying underfoot conditions. Hickey was followed home by Anna Sadowska of Civil Service and DSD’s Justine O’Connell Urell. Sportsworld won a tightly-contested W35 team competing beating Donore by three points, with Civil Service only a point behind again.
Donore’s Michael McMahon won the men’s 6km in a sprint from Rathfarnham pair Shane O’Neill and Paul Fleming. Donore finished best of the M35 teams, with Rathfarnham WSAF second.
In the age groups, Damian Martin of Raheny finished tenth overall and first M50, beating Paul Cowhie of Civil Service. There were also good wins for Chris Keeling of Balbriggan and District and Liffey Valley’s John Cullen in the M55 and M60 age groups respectively. DSD finished first W50 team with Cathryn Brady 1st and Annette Kehoe 3rd W50; Sheelagh Jones, Linda Finnegan and Maxine Jones making it a W55 clean sweep for the club, and Joan Coyle 1st W65.
A total of 201 men (and 24 teams) and 151 women (and 19 teams) lined out making this probably the biggest adult cross-country race in the country – apart from the National Masters of course!
BRIAN KIRWAN OF St Laurence O’Toole’s made it five in a row at the Carlow Senior Championships; his club mate Jamie Wall finished 13 seconds behind for second. Mary Clare Byrne also StLOT, was first woman with the club nailing down both team awards.
ON A GOOD WEEKEND FOR Leinster athletes, high jumper Barry Pender of St Abban’s soared over 2.26 an an indoor meet – not only a PB, but a European Championships qualifying height and just 3cm off the Rio ’16 mark of 2.29.
FORMER MOUNTAIN RUNNER Beth McCluskey was a clear winner of the women’s title at the Irish Cyclocross Championships in Tollymore. Finishing second was orienteer was Maeve O’Grady while also showing well was Alwynne Shannon, another former mountain running international.
