Sinead Diver from Belmullet in Co Mayo finished 21st in the marathon at the World Championships in Beijing. Representing Australia, the Melbourne-based Diver crossed the line in 2:36:38.
Aged 38, Diver moved to Australia at the age of 25 and is a mother of two. She took up running five years ago and caught the eyes of the Australian – and Irish – selectors when she ran 2:34.15 for her debut marathon in Melbourne last year.
That unfortunately was outside the Irish qualifying mark set at 2:33.30, although the IAAF standard was 2:44.00, which was also the Australian standard. Diver – who ran with her fingernails painted green white and orange – now aims to qualify for next year’s Rio Olympics and hopes to run a faster time for the marathon probably in Europe next spring.
