World Masters: Silver for Cathy McCourt in Perth (ongoing results)

Cathy McCourt took Ireland’s first medal when she finished second in the W40 cross-country at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth Australia yesterday.

McCourt completed the 8km course in 30 mins 49.52, putting her second overall behind Australia’s Belinda Martin who finished in 29:18.03. McCourt is in top form after winning the NI Masters cross-country trial a week before travelling to Australia.

TIMG_6419o make up a team, Sue Zlnay and Irish team manager Ann Gormley ran in the W45 race although both are in the over 50 category. The result was  team silver for Ireland. Zlnay, a Dubliner and a member of DSD when she lived in Ireland, emigrated to Australia many years ago. She finished 12th W45 in 37:47.17. Ann Gormley of Donore, who is a race walker, finished 22nd in 46:5.05. In the W70 race, also over 8km, Evelyn McNelis missed out on a medal by just two seconds when she finished fourth in 41:57.31.

Of the men, Ronan Kearns of Rathfarnham WSAF finished seventh in the M35 race with a time of 28:35. Sean Cooney of Tara AC in Meath was sixth M75 in 20:12.96.

In other events, Lucy Moore of DSD was sixth in the W55 hammer with a best throw of 29.07m, while John McMullin of Mullingar Harriers was seventh in the M70 5000m walk in 31:01.81.

  • Lucy Moore finished 7th in the W55 triple jump on Thursday with a best effort of 7.49m.
  • In the M40 800m final today (Friday), Timothy Shiels of Derry TC missed out on a medal  by 11/100th second when he finished fourth in 2:02.00.Cathy McCourt has won a third medal after finishing third in the W40 5000m
