Just a day after he won the M60 800m title at the at the World Indoors Masters in Budapest, West Waterford’s Joe Gough has qualified for tomorrow’s 1500m final. Also qualifying was Brian Lynch of North East Runners who won the opening heat with Gough on his heels for third place.
Also through to the 1500m finals are Mark O’Shea and Niall Donnelly (M40); Cathal McLaughlin and Mick Traynor (M45) and Paul Cowhie (M50). Donore’s Ann Woodlock, second in the 3000m earlier this week, goes in the W75 final.
In other results today (Sat), Mary Barrett finished third in the W55 shot and equal sixth in the high jump along with Lucy Moore Fox (who was 8th in the shot).
In a thrilling M60 800m final, Gough came home in 2 mins 15.08 secs – more than a second clear of Nolan Shaheed for the USA, who finished in 2:16.18. He blazed around the final lap in 30 seconds.
Gough and Shaheed had been drawn in the same heat which turned into a waiting game, with both men qualifying easily. They were separated in the semi-finals, with Gough running a comfortable 2:23.30 and Shaheed 2:21.49.
Gough’s time in the final was just outside the world record of 2 mins 14.06 secs he set at the Leinster Indoors in Athlone last month. It was a first ever title for the West Waterford man who had accumulated six European gold medals along with two world silvers before heading for Budapest. He also holds 75 national titles.
Earlier in the week, Raheny’s Mick Traynor finished eighth overall and second M45 in the men’s 8000m cross-country and then 4th in the 3000m in a time of 9 mins 02.55 secs.
In the multi-events, John McDermott was third M70 with 3814 points and Mary Barrett from Loughrea 5th W55 with 3507 points, with her best result coming in the shot. Finola Moore was 7th in the W50 pentathlon, scoring 2487 points. Donore’s Anne Gormley was 8th in the W45 5000m walk.
In the M55 60m, Shane Sheridan of DSD finished 7th in 7.88. In the 200m heats he ran 25.71 for 10th and makes it through to the semi-finals, where he finished 13th in 25.97 secs. David Hayde ran 7.58 secs to finish ninth fastest in the M45 60m heats, but was slower in the semi-finals running 7.62 and finishing 13th. In the M50 age group, Michael Linden ran 7.90 secs in the heats and 7.88 secs for 14th in the semi-finals. At 200m, John McCarrick was 4th in his heat in 26.61.

In the W45 discus, Maureen Glanton finished fourth with a throw of 32.80m. Lucy Moore-Fox was 6th in the W55 triple jump with 7.95m.
In 800m semi-finals, Joe Conway finished 12th M45 in 2:11.87 after just making it through from the preliminary rounds with a time of 2:14.25. Tim Shiels has second in his M35 heat, and his time of 2:04.25 saw him missing out on the semi-finals by a single place.
