After winning the 800m earlier in the week, West Waterford’s Joe Gough decided to go for the Irish record in the M60 1500m at the World Masters Championships in Lyon. Lying eighth with 300m to go, he ut in a huge effort to move up to third place, finishing in 4:38.36 and smashing the Irish record by a whopping 13 seconds. In the W40 race, Maria McCarthy of Farranfore Maine Valley finished fifth.
In the javelin, Hugh Gallagher of Milford in Co Donegal finished second in the M90 class with a best of 13.17m. So 23 medals for Ireland – with two days left of competition.
Competing in the 400m semi-finals, John Mac Dermott qualified for the final.
