World Masters: 5000m silver for Parnell and McCarthy; bronze Traynor, McCourt

Carmel Parnell of Leevale who won the W60 8km cross-country on Tuesday added a silver in the 5000m to her collection today at the World Masters in Lyon. Raheny’s Mick Traynor, who had won the M50 cross-country, finished third in his 5000m, while  in the W40 race, Maria McCarthy from Kerry was a brilliant second and Cathy McCourt third. Maurice McMahon was 8th in his age group in 16 mins 10 secs. Temperature was a sizzling 35 degrees.

Joe Gough of West Waterford goes into the semi-finals of the M60 800m in confident form after winning his  heat in a comfortable 2:19.07. Also through to the next round of the 800m are Mark O’Shea M40, Ken Archbold, M45, and Philip O’Doherty M55.

In the M70 hammer, Patsy Conboy finished 14th with a best of 12.50m.

W45: 11 Carmel Crowley 19:45.58, 12 Jacqueline McMonagle 19:51.30. W60: 1 Lidia Zentner (Ger) 19:57.32, 2 Carmel Parnell (Leevale) 20:13.66.

Hammer – M70: 14 Patsy Conboy 12.50.

Decathlon – M40: 29 Kevin Byrne 46.36

Heptathlon – W55: 8 Dannea Herron 4189.
