Some very interesting running on the roads today: at the Jingle Bells 5km, there was a home victory for Donore’s John Travers in 14 mins 6 secs, while Mary Cullen of North Sligo made her long-awaited return when she won the women’s race. Her time of 15 mins 38 secs put her 14th overall and ten seconds ahead of Ciara Mageean of UCD, with Maria McCambridge of DSD third in 16 mins 19 secs.
In the Waterford Half Marathon, Lizzie Lee made a triumphant return only five months after the birth of her daughter. We can do no better than steal the words of Gearoid O Laoi (a relative!) from Facebook:
“A full two minutes before I expected to see her, at mile 12, I could see an explosion of elbows which is the unique signal of approaching Lizzie. Considering that, or perhaps because, she has a five month old baby, she did a PB and a course record in the land of the Blaa today, 1:14:30. She’s wired ever since and very terribly pleased as well.. She has always run with her hands very high and this makes her elbows act like those of a canny corner back in hurling…”
Overall Martin Fgan, who returned from a doping ban earlier this year, finished a full four minutes clear of the field.
