Track: Gillick 2nd in Belfast. Travers wins 3000m. Byrne makes 400H Euro mark. Connolly runs 5k PB (updated)

IMG_6419DSD’s David Gillick continued his comeback at the Belfast International Meet held in conjunction with the Irish Milers’ Club at the Mary Peters Track in rain-sodden Belfast today. Running his specialist 400m, Gillick finished second behind English athlete Theo Campbell, with Campbell timed at 46.24 secs and Gillick at 47.27 secs.

John Travers of Donore won the men’s 3000m in his opening outdoor race of the season. Travers picked up the pace from about 1200m, finishing in 8 mins 03.69 secs. Finishing second was Thomas Moran of Dunshaughlin in 8:10.94, with Pierre Murchan of Celtic DCH third in 8:11.77. Travers will try for the Rio ’16 5000m qualifying time of 13 mins  35 secs on May 28 in Oordegem, Belgium; his aim is a time of around 14 mins 30 secs. Murchan, along with Jack O’Leary of Mullingar Harriers and James Edgar from City of Lisburn all clocked world junior B qualifying times for the 5,000m, with 3,000m times counting. O’Leary was fifth in 8:14.13 and Edgar sixth in 8:14.55.

Running in a mixed 3000m was Ciara Mageean of UCD. She finished sixth overall in 9:07.47; winner of David O’Flaherty of Newcastle and District (yes – Kerry’s “wee brother”) in 8:56.62.

In the 400m hurdles, Christine McMahon was beaten for a second week by England’s Jess Turner, who won the race in 58 mins 12secs. McMahon finished in 58 mins 32 secs, with Ferrybank’s Jessie Barr third  in 58.50 secs. In the men’s 110m hurdles, Ger O’Donnell of Carrick-on-Shannon finished third in  14.15 secs.

One of the races of the day was the women’s 800m won by Kathy Brown of Scotland in 2:04.05. A close second was Riocht’s Laura Crowe in 2:04.21. World masters’ champion Kelly Neely of City of Lisburn finished fifth in 2:05.92  Best of the Irish in the women’s 1500m was UCD’s Ciara Everard in 4:25.35.

A total of nine European Youth and Junior Championships qualifying times were achieved, among them a second 800m standard for Carla Sweeney of WSAF, who ran 2:08.47.  In the men’s 800m, Aaron McGlynn’s time of 1:5.95 was  inside the European Youth qualifying mark. McGlynn, aged 16, is a member of Finn Valley.

PAUL BYRNE made the  400m hurdles qualifying mark for the European Championships with a time of 50. 73 secs at the British Athletics League premier division opening round Eton. Byrne, running for Birchfield Harriers, finished second behind Jacob Paul (WSEH) in 50.20; Jason Harvey was fourth with 51.68 secs. Byrne also won the B 110m hurdles and  ran the opening leg of the 4 x 400m in which Birchfield was second.   In the 400m, Richard Morrissey, running for Shaftesbury Barnet, clocked a time of 47.85 secs and helped his club to victory in the 4x100m, Morrissey is just home from a training camp in Florida. Marco Pons, competing for Liverpool, threw 49.07 in the discus. Others with good results at Eton includes Barry Pender 2.20m in the high jump and Colin Bourke 6.97m in the long jump.

IN THE USA, Rob Tully’s time of 1:48.68 for 800m in Fayetteville puts him top of the rankings ahead of Declan Murray on 1:49.00.  Also over 800m, Clare Tarplee of St Coca’s time of 2:04.11 in Eagle Rock puts her third on the women’s list behind Rose Ann Galligan and Siofra Cleirigh Buttner.

IMG_7818 1 (1)BREEGE CONNOLLY of North Belfast Harriers ran a personal best of 16 mins 39 secs to finish first woman and fourth overall at the Ballyshannon 5k on Friday evening. It means that Connolly, who is third on the list of  marathon qualifiers for Rio, is peaking perfectly for a summer marathon after keeping a low profile over the winter months. Winner was Ronan Matthews of host club Tir Chonaill in 16 mins 14 secs, also a personal best. * There are suspicions that the course was 30m short.

ADAM KING from Iveragh AC threw 68.83m in the junior men’s hammer at the Leevale Open Sports in Cork –  a second B standard for the World Juniors win Bydgoszcz, Poland in July.   In the youth men’s hammer, Lifford Strabane’s Brendan O’Donnell threw 64.82m, his second time over the A standards for the European Youths. Cara Kennedy won the women’s hammer with 55.83m; Tralee’s Clare Fitzgerald finished best in the discus with 48.49m, while DSD’s Anita White threw 45.23m in the javelin.

In the women’s 200m, Sharlene Mawdsley of Newport ran 23.93 secs, comfortably inside the  World Juniors B standard  and just outside the A standard of 23.90. Finishing second was Phil Healy of Bandon who won the 400m in 54.96 secs.  Dooneen’s Cathal Locke  time of 54.43 secs  in the youth 400m hurdles is an A standard for the European Youths.

Christopher Sibanda of Clonliffe Harriers won the men’s 100m in 10.87 secs and then took the 200m in 22.08.  Winning the women’s 100m was Joan Healy of Bandon, with Niamh Whelan and Sharlene Mawdsley second and third.
