Some impressive performances at the Woodie’s DIY National Masters in Tullamore despite a series of heavy showers that forced delays and hindered athletes competing in the more technical events.
On the track, Roger Sexton of North Down proved fastest of the day in the men’s 200m, clocking a time of 23.66 that gave him M40 gold. Other impressive runs came from was David Hayde of St Laurence O’Toole who ran 24.41 to win the M45 category, while taking M55 gold was Ken Deevy of KCH in 25.34. Sexton also won the M40 100m in 11.50, while Hayde took the M45 100m in 11.84.
Fastest of the 200m woman was Elaine Cronin of Gneeveguilla who won the W35 title in 29.46. Her clubmate Brid Stack won the W40 title in 30.26 and finished second in the 100m behind another Gneeveguilla athlete, Antoinette O’Brien, who also won the high jump.
In a W45 200m dominated by Meath athletes, Paula Reilly of Celbridge ran 29.82 to beat Trim’s Moira Peppard who finished in 30.68, with the same pair finishing first and second in the 100m.
Overall winner of the women’s 3000m was Natasha Adams of Lifford in 10 mins 15.6 secs, who was also first W35. Dunboyne’s Fiona Reid was second in 10:33.21, with Catriona Devine of Finn Valley third in 10:47.19. First W40 and fourth overall was Angela McCann of Clonmel who finished in 10:50.07, with Emila Dan of Dunboyne second in 11:10.60.
A competitive W45 race saw Noeleen Porter of Finn Valley beating Helen Stockdale of Clones in 11:08.96. Mary Sweeney of St Finbarr’s added to her vast collection of titles by winning the W50 race, beating Kay Byrne of Finn Valley, while Sheelagh Jones of DSD was first W55 in 11:55.97.
A tactical men’s 5000m ended in victory for Brian James Murphy of Carrick-on-Suir. He held back while Paul Buckley of Ferbane and North Belfast’s Conor Curran set the pace, timing his break to perfection to finish in 16 mins 1.47 secs. Tinryland’s Tommy Payne, now an M55, was first home in the M50 race in 16 mins 58.63. Behind him came Tallaght’s Niall Coppinger who won the M50 race from Dermot Clarke of Bohermeen.
In the throws, Stuart Thurgood of Menapians caused quite a stir when he send the hammer out to 54.50 for M35 victory. At the other end of the age scale, Patsy Conboy of Brothers Pearse was first M70 and Farranfore’s ageless Eddie Mulcahy first M75 (although he’s over 80).Winning the M65 title was Philip Conway of Crusaders with a throw of 33.23.
Multi-eventer Geraldine Finnegan of Dunleer proved best in the women’s javelin with a throw of 28.73m and was also first W45.Another multi-eventer, Dannea Herron of Derry City won the W50 title with a best of 25.16, beating Loughrea’s Mary Barrett who earlier had won the high jump with a 1.30 leap. Sheila Champion of Sportsworld retained her W75 javelin title, also winning the shot.
Best throw in the discus came from the stylish Maureen Glanton of Skibbereen who threw 33.25 to win the W45 class; Glanton also won her age category in the hammer. Maiake van der Wal of Clonmel won the W40 gold with 24.09, having earlier taken the javelin with a best of 27.31. In the W35 class, Hilary Casey of DSD threw a personal best 23.90 for gold. Her clubmate Lucy Moore-Fox won the W55 high jump and hammer.

* At the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Annadale’s Paul Pollock ran a smart race to finish 21st in the men’s marathon, His time of 2:16.42 was his second fastest ever. Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu , running for Moldova, finished 48th in 2:34.17. With the heat less intense than for the women’s race, 52 of the 71 starters finished the race. Winner was London Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda in 2:09.51.
