Defending champion Kevin Mulcaire of St Flannan’s Ennis was a convincing winner of the boys’ senior 6.5km race at the Glo Health Irish Schools Cross Country Championships at Sligo Race Course.
It was a fourth national cross-country title for Mulcaire, who is also the current Irish junior cross-country champion. He made his break with a lap and a half to go and came home well clear of Peter Lynch from St Kieran’s Kilkenny and James Edgar of Friends Lisburn. Winning the team title for a second year were St Aidan’s CBS – the half term training camp in Leitrim clearly paid off, with the team led home by Cathal Doyle sixth.
Winning the senior girls 2.5km was Leinster champion Eimear Fitzpatrick of Our Lady’s Templeogue, who just held off the challenge of her training partner Niamh Ni Chiarda of Colaiste Iosagain. As at the Leinster Championships, Niamh Corry of Malahide CS finished third. Team winners were Loreto Mullingar.
In the inter girls’ race, Sarah Healy of Holy Child Killiney was a comfortable winner, beating her training partner Amy Rose Farrell of Mount Anville. Healy had won the junior title a year earlier. On a good day for Leinster athletes, Adam Fitzpatrick of St Kieran’s Kilkenny won the inter boys’ title, where Rice College proved best of the teams.
Another Leinster champion Louis O’Loughlin of Moyle Park, who was the minor winner last year, won the junior boys’ race. St Colman’s Newry took team gold. Coming home first of the junior girls was Saoirse O’Brien from Sacred Heart Westport.
Minor winners were Sean Donoghue of St Declan’s Cabra and Aimee Kenna.
MICHELLE FINN of UL won the women’s university title from Shona Heaslip and Laura O’Shaughnessy. David McCarthy of DCU made a welcome return to competition to win the men’s 8000m, beating UCC’s Ben Thistlewood and defending champion Liam Brady of Athlone IT. Team winners were the UL women and the DCU men, with DCU best overall team.
