Siofra Cleirigh Buttner |
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain continued her five year winning streak at schools level when she took the senior girls’ title at the Aviva Leinster Schools Cross-Country Championships in blustery Santry on Wednesday February 6.
Only with 400m to go did Buttner move to the front quickly building on a gap on the field for a comfortable win.
Linda Conroy (Mercy Kilbeggan) who struggled at the North Leinsters, whowed a welcome return to form when finishing second. With Clar Nic Cartaigh third, Sarah Ni Mhaolmhuire fourth and Sorcha Ni Umfraid fifth, Colaiste Iosagain were clear winners of the team title.
In the senior boys’ race, Aaron Hanlon of St Mary’s Drogheda was another intermediate champion making an effortless transition to the senior ranks. He forced the pace in the 600m race from the start and was soon out on his own. Equally untroubled was Ian Guiden of St Aidan’s in second place. Behing him Cillian O Maonaigh, the East Leinster champion held on for bronze. In fourth place, Padraig Moran was leading Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar to team victory for a second year.
Finish of the day came in the inter boys’ race where Pierre Murchan of St Declan’s CBS just made it to the line ahead of Jack Mac Gabhann of St Mary’s College and early leader Dylan Keegan from Templeogue College.
After a long break from racing, Ella Fennelly of Mount Anville won the girl’s inter race, with Isabelle Odlum from Rathdrum a fighting second.
At the Aviva Munster Championships, held in Waterford IT after a last-minute switch from Cork, Sean Tobin (High School Clonmel) was an impressive winner of the boys’ senior race, with the All-Irelands on March 9 like to see a show-down between Tobin and Leinster champion Hanlon. Tobin finished comfortable clear of Kyle Larkin (Ard Scoil Ris Limerick).
