Round-Up: Schools Cross Title for Maher; Indoor and Wicklow Ultra Updates

Dunshaughlin’s Paddy Maher  won the boys’ junior 4.5km race at the annual SIAB Schools Cross-Country International in  Bolton, with James Maguire  of St Benildus finishing third.

Caoimhe Harrington  of  Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai had made the perfect start for the Irish team when she won the junior girls’ 3.5km,  just pipping England’s Josie Czura on the line; the two were given the same time.

In the inter boy’s 5.5km, Kevin Mulcaire  from St Flannan’s in Ennis finished a fighting second, breaking up a phalanx of white vests from England, who  took seven of the top eight places. With Peter Lynch, Shane Hughes and Stanley Edgar  finishing together in 9th, 10th and 11 laces, followed  soon after by Christy Conlon and Barry Keane 16th and 17th, the  Irish boys finished a creditable second.

England won all four team titles;  in the inter girls’ 4.5km,  their team of eight took the top eight places. Best for Ireland was Isabel Carron of Skerries who finished 12th.

Some interesting results from the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Championships  in Athlone, where Sligo sprinter Zak Irwin won the M19 60m in 6.96 secs.

At under 16 level, Gina Akpe-Moses  from the Blackrock club in Co Louth improved the girls’ 60m championship record to 7.67 secs – the fastest girls’ time of the day.

Recently crowned All Ireland schools’ cross-country champion Andrew Corscoran  from Star of the Sea won the M19 1500m in a time of 3:57.04.

In the field, Micheala Walsh  from Swinford threw a stunning 15.08m championship best to win the W17 shot putt.  This  obliterated Claire Fitzgerald ‘s 2007 mark of 13.91m. Another championship best came in the M16 shot, where Finn Valley’s James Kelly won with 16.78m.

Leevale all-rounder Sam Healy won the M19 long jump with 7.02m and goes in tomorrow’s 60m hurdles and high jump. Another all-rounder in action was Elizabeth Morland of Cushinstown  who won the W17  long jump with 5.75m.

JUSTIN MAXWELL from East Coast runners in Larne and Donna McLoughlin of Achill won the Wicklow Way Ultra from Glencullen to Ballinastoe and back in a time of 4 hrs 12 mins (corrected result – apologies for previous error). This grueling 52km run was made even tougher by  strong headwinds on the first half, treacherously slippery boardwalk  on the shoulder of Djouce, hail showers and a touch of thunder and lightning.  It still wasn’t quite as bad as last year’s snow, although times were slow. Well done all who finished.

First home in the Wicklow Trail 26km from Ballinastoe to Glencullen (with the wind at their back – sort of!) was Aidan McMoreland  in 1 hr 53 mins 25 secs.Niamh O Ceallaigh of Sli Cualann was first woman.   Pics  from Ballinastoe and the finish at www.lindie.zenfolio.com.

JOSH O’SULLIVAN-HOURIHAN of UCC retained the men’s title at the Irish Universities Mountain Running Championships held at Camaderry, Co Wicklow. Hourihan completed the 6.7km course in 29 mins 38 secs. UCD’s Conor O’Keeffe was a minute behind for second place, with Guglielmo Ziani of Trinity third. Trinity’s Clare McCarthy a former junior international was the runaway winner of the women’s race in 37 mins 20 secs. Her Trinity teammate Laura Schwirz was second with Dympha O’Dwyer of NUIG third.  Trinity made it a team double.

MARK HANRAHAN finished sixth in the 5000m  with a time of 13 mins 58 .03 secs at the IAAF World Challeneg Meet in Melbourne, Australia. Laura Crowe was ninth in the 1500m in 4:18.87.

RAHENY’S Fiona Stack set a new course record of  79 mins 44 secs on her way to victory in the women’s race at the Larne Half Marathon. Joe McAllister of St Malachy’s was first man in 69 mins 44 secs. It was a fourth victory in this race for McAllister, winner of the Jimmy’s ’10’ a week earlier.
