Ciara Mageean won a competitive elite women’s 1500m at the Flanders Cup track meet in Orrtegem, Belgium. The UCD athlete finished in 4:08.05, just ahead of Sarah Lahti of Sweden in 4:08.91 and Norway’s Karoline Grovdal in 4:09.03.
In the women’s steeplechase, Sara Treacy of Dunboyne, making her season’s debut in the event, finished fourth in 9:44.56. Her best is 9:44.14 and Treacy was in the hunt until three broke away with 400m to go. In the same race, Michelle Finn was 15th in 10:10.32 and Anne Marie McGlynn 28th in 10:43.08. Winner was Juliana Gomes dos Santors of Brazil in 9:39.33.
Eoin Everard clocked a time of 3:41.73 in heat 4 of the 1500m, while in the 5000m heat 1, David McCarthy of West Waterford was 10th in 13:42.24, Kevin Batt of DSD 11th in 13:42.82 and John Travers 26th in 13:59.58. In the second heat, DSD’s Brandon Hargreaves was 11th in 14:09.69.
UCD’s Sarah Lavin finished 4th in the women 100m hurdles final with a time of 13.75 secs. In the 800m, Rose Anne Galligan was 10th in 2:03.45.
A large group of sprinters was competing, with the highlight a victory in 45.03 secs for the women’s 4x100m quartet of Joan Healy, Phil Healy, Sarah Murray and Niamh Whelan. A junior Irish team of Phoebe Murphy, Sharlene Mawdsley, Gina Akpe Moses and Janine Boyle finished third in 45.54 secs which qualifies them for the World Juniors. The women’s 4 x 400m team finished fourth in 3:44.36.
Individually, Sharlene Mawdsley nd Marcus Lawler both made European Championships B qualifying times in the 200m, with Mawdsley running 23. 55 secs and Lawler 20.91 secs. Lawler also ran 10.71 secs for 100m.
The Irish junior men’s and women’s 4x100m teams qualified for the World Junior Championships with times of 40.97 and 45.54 respectively, while the senior women’s 4x400m squad were fourth in 3:44:36.
The men’s 4 x 100m team of Dean Adams, Eanna Madden, Marcus Lawler and Craig Lynch finished second in 40.43 secs., with the junior Irish team of Doherty, David McDonalds, Sean Lawlor and Joseph Ojewumi third in 40.75 secs to qualify for the World Juniors.
BLACKROCK’S Sarah Healy won the B 1500m with a time of 4:27.50 at the BMC Grand Prix meet in Watford; Healy, aged 16, is red hot favourite for gold at next Saturday’s All Ireland Schools T-F in Tullamore. In the A race, Nadia Power of Templeogue AC was 12th in 4:30.19, with Ellie Hartnee of UCD one place behind in 4:32.03.
Over 800m, Claire Tarplee of St Coca’s clocked a time of 2:3.29 when finishing 5th in the A race. In the B race, Carla Sweeney of WSAF ran a personal best 2:06.53 which will copper-fasten her selection for the World Juniors. Katie Kirk of Lagan Valley was 6th in 2:08.03 and Kilmore’s Fiona Kehoe 9th in 2:08.19. Brian Kelly of St Abban’s was third in the men’s B race in 1:49.21.
Finishing second in the women’s 5000m was Sli Cualann’s resurgent Deirdre Byrne in 15:39.45. She was narrowly beaten by Polish athlete Paulina Kaczynska who clocked 15:39.04. Finishing 13th was Riocht’s Shona Heaslip in 17:27.71. In the men’s race, Clonmel’s Kevin Maunsell was 8th in 14:10.61 and Colm Sheehan of Leevale 10th in 14:15.74.
SIOFRA CLEIRIGH BUTTNER, running for Villanova, booked her place at the NCAA outdoor championships finals next month when she finished second in her quarter-final heat in Florida on Friday evening. Cleirigh Buttner posted a time of 2:03.72 – the second-fastest time of her career. Earlier this season, she ran 2:03.52.
Earlier this year, Cleirigh Buttner made it to the NCAA Championships indoors. She won the individual BIG EAST title in the event at the outdoor conference meet two weeks ago.
