After her Rio ’16 exploits, Leevale’s Lizzie Lee made a triumphant return to the Irish roads when she won today’s Charleville International Half Marathon in Co Cork.
Lee’s time of 79 mins 47 mins put her comfortably clear of Jill Hodgins who finished in 82 mins 12 secs. Dunboyne’s Emilia Dan was third in 85 mins 11 secs.
Defending champion and regular Irish visitor Ismail Ssenyange was overall winner of the race in 65 mins 49 secs – his fastest time ever for the course.Raheny’s Mark Kirwan was a distant second and Paul Stephenson of Rathfarnham WSAF third.
In Belfast, Freddy Sittuk of Raheny had another titanic (sorry!) battle with Foyle Valley’s Scott Rankin at the Deep River Rock Belfast Half Marathon. Ranking did his best to burn off Sittuk, but to no avail, although there was only five seconds between them at the finish.
First woman was the in-form Laura Graham of Foyle Valley in 78 mins 23 secs.
AT THE RIO PARALYMPICS, Le Cheile’s Patrick Monahan, found the searing 32 degree heat too hot to handle in the T54 wheelchair marathon. The Kildare man finished 16th in 1 hrs 40 mins 26 sec, over 10 minutes slower than his personal best. Several competitors dropped out before half-way and the race was won in a relatively slow time of 1:26.16 by the ‘Swiss Bullet’ Marcel Hug who edged out Australian Kurt Fearnley in a thrilling sprint for the line. Monahan was hit by illness in Rio which forced him to pull out of the 800m earlier in the week.
The Irish Paralympic team of 48 athletes across ten sports will come home with an incredible 11 medals from the Rio Games – four gold, four silver and three bronze – a number that exceeded all expectations, and a 28th placing on the medals table; inside the top 30 spot that was targeted.
CHRISTIAN MCKENNA (M20) and Caellain McQuaid (W17) both finished 9th in their races at the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships held over a physically rough course at Skiddaw, Keswick, England.
MARK KIRWAN Of Raheny Shamrock and Caroline Crowley of Crusaders, representing their workplaces, were the winners at the Grant Thornton Corporate 5km last week.
