Brandon Hargreaves of Dundrum South Dublin and Letterkenny’s Annmarie McGlynn laid down markers for the forthcoming cross-country season when they won the men and women’s 8km races at the Autumn Open Cross Country in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Hargreaves ran a smart race, letting Irish junior champion Kevin Mulcaire of Ennis TC and Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally do the hard work before taking over in front with about a lap to go. John Coghlan of MSB ended up second after a strong final lap.
McGlynn, who captained the Irish women’s team to third at last year’s European Cross-Country led from the start, with Teresa Doherty of Letterkenny passed for second place with about a lap to go by Shona Heaslip of Riocht, who is coached by Niamh O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan, who has won the British and Irish Cross-County title more than once, was in action herself aiming to nail down an over 50 place on the Irish team for this year’s international, which takes place in Santry on November 14. As it happens, both McGlynn and Doherty are eligible for the Irish W35 team – and if they decided to run, could help Ireland to a historic first ever victory at the masters’ international. Last time the international was held in Santry, Ireland lost to England by one single miserable point. Sonia O’Sullivan, who was an interested spectator in the Phoenix Park (and also eligible for the masters team as it happens) was saving herself for next weekend’s SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon where she will be running to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
In the men’s junior 6km, incorporated into the 8km, Patrick MacGabhann of DSD came home first ahead of Kilkenny’s Peter Lynch and Pierre Murchan of DCH. Best in the in the junior women’s 4km was an imperious Hope Saunders of Clonliffe who won by almost half a minute. For second, Kilkenny’s Aoibhe Richardson just pipped Emma O’Brien of Sli Cualann.

IAN GUIDEN was a clear winner of the open four-mile at the Teachers’ Cross-Country that launched the BHAA’s winter season in Castleknock College. Orla Drumm was first woman; Anna Sadowska won the women’s 2-mile race. Next up for the BHAA is the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon, where the usual BHAA grades will apply for company teams.
