Round-Up: Euro Masters Gold for Jackie Carthy. Silver for Niamh Fitzgerald. World Mountain Running.

Niamh Fitzgerald (Lucan)

Jackie Carthy Stamp of Kilmore AC in Co Wexford has won Ireland’s first gold medal at the European Masters’ Athletics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

Carthy won the W45 category in the cross-country, finishing second overall in the W35-50 race. Her time of 13 mins 245 secs put her just four seconds behind overall winner Christina Artuso of Italy who was first W35. Finishing third W70 was Evelyn McNelis of Naas AC, who earlier in the week was fourth in the 10,000m.

In the 1500m finals, Niamh Fitzgerald of Lucan Harriers took W40 silver in 4:46.32 behind British athlete Louise Rudd who clocked 4:41.92.  Just missing out were Cathryn Brady of DSD  fourth W50 and Cathal McLoughlin fourth M50.

On Saturday, Shane Sheridan of DSD M55 and Dorothy McLennan of Sportsworld W80 took bronze in the 100m. Ireland has won five medals so far starting with Declan Power’s silver in the M45 10,000m last Wednesday.

SARAH McCORMACK produced the best Irish result at the World Mountain Running Championships in Premana, Italy. She finished 17th in the women’s senior race won by Kenya’s  Lucy Wanbui Murigi with the legendary Andrea Mayr  of Austria a fighting second and USA first team. Uganda won the senior and junior men’s individual and team titles; also the junior women’s race.

ANNMARIE McGLYNN’s superb form continued on Thursday evening in Owen Roes 5kmin Co Tyrone. Her time of 15.53 saw her finish second overall and first woman by a margin of more than two minutes over her nearest challenger.
