Tomas Fitzpatrick made it a home victory for a second year at the Tallaght 5km, when he beat a quality field including Clonliffe’s Mark Kenneally and Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock. His winning time was 14 mins 37 secs.
Finishing 11th overall and first woman in 16 mins 26 secs was Maria McCambridge who, like many south Dublin based athletes has been finding a home away from home at the Tallaght track since the closure first of Belfield and then of Irishtown. MARY CULLEN made her long-awaited comeback to the roads at the Ballymote Teams Challenge 5km, where she finished fourth overall in 15 mins 58 secs. In the Ballymote Mile, John Travers of Donore was the winner in 4 mins 4 secs with Danny Mooney of Letterkenny second in 4:10.
PAUL POLLOCK travelled to California for the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, where he finished 15th in the 10m,000m in 29:15.51; winner was Britain’s Andy Vernon in 27:42.62. After the race, Pollock described his performance as one of his worst to date.
FREDDY KERON Sittuk won the marathon at the Great Limerick Run in 2:26.38, followed closely by Lezan Kimutai in 2:27.08. Sittuk had withdrawn from the Belfast Marathon, claiming lack of fitness. First woman was Pauline Curley of Tullamore in 2:48.49. Angela McCann of Clonmel was a distant second. Peter Somba from Kenya won the half marathon in 67 mins 02 secs beating Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu by just seven seconds. Aoife Cook from Youghal was first woman. Rathfarnham’s Sean Hehir won the six-mile race where Catherina McKiernan was fourth overall and first woman, followed by Orla Drumm, fifth and second woman.
LIZZIE LEE from Leevale was a comfortable winner of the West of Ireland Women’s Mini Marathon in Castlebar, Co Mayo. Her time of 35 mins 35 secs put her well clear of the chasers led by Norah Newcombe of Mayo AC who finished in 37:14, with Galway’s Regina Casey third. JAYME ROSSITER of Clonliffe Harriers broke the nine-minute barrer for the first time when finishing third in the steeplechase at the BUCS Championships in Bedford Rossiter was competing with Loughborough. Also in action in the 400m hurdles were Irish international Christine McMahon, ran 60.02 secs in her heat but didn’t run in the final, where and Nessa Cooper Millett of St Abban’s finished third in 60.32. Winning the women’s shot was Claire Fitzpatrick with a put of 14.49m. Kathy Hetherington of North Down finished second in the discus with 43.78m. Making the 100m final was Jonathan Browning of Ballymena and Antrim. Adam Hill and Jonathan Hill of Lisburn (jumps) and Leevale’s Paul Scanlon (800m) also competed.
RAHENY’S David Sheehan and Orba Dilworth of Sportsworld were the first home in the Wings for Life international charity run around Dun Laoghaire; 1,264 finished.
ASHLING CARROLL of Fingallians won the opening round of the Women’s Meet & Train Summer League in Lucan last week. Cloniffe’s Bernadette Kiernan was second and Claire Ni Fhaircheallaigh of Dunboye third. Next round over 5km at Firhouse on Sunday May 10. Newcomers welcome.
