Roads: Freddy Sittuk Wins Samsung Night Run; record for Bidwell

IMG_0948FREDDY KERON SITTUK of Raheny Shamrock won the Samsung Night run 10km  in 31 mins 29 secs. Just a second behind was last year’s winner Peter Brandon Somba, while third was DSD’s international mountain runner Killian Mooney in 32 mins 3 secs, beating Lezan Kimutai, a regular visitor to Ireland for over a decade now. Orla Drumm of Crusaders was first woman in 35 mins 15 secs; four seconds behind was Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisoleigh, the winner last year. Raheny’s Maria O’Sullivan was third in 35 mins 48 secs.

AT THE LONDON MARATHON, Breege Connolly of North Belfast Harriers ran a time of 2:37.29. That put her less than a minute behind Paula Radcliffe who ran 2:36.55 in her farewell marathon and is a personal best by two minutes. It is also well inside the Rio ’15 qualification mark of 2 hours 42 minutes.  Other Irish results: Greg Roberts (City of Derry) 2:24.05, Trevor Power 2:30.3, Anne Curley  (Donore, W40) 2:58.59, Martin Hoare 2:32.38, David Fitzpatrick 2:34.43, Frank Quinlan 2:36.36, Joe Cawley (M40) 2:36.56.

IN DUSSELDORF, Sergiu Ciobanu of  Clonliffe went through the half way in 68 mins 33 secs,  and then decided to leave it for another day.”Ninety percent humidity wasn’t the best day to chase a time in the marathon…but as a national champion with the fastest time among Irish athletes in 2012 (2:15.27), I intend to get the standard and compete in Rio for Ireland,” he writes on his FB page. Go for it Sergiu!

THE SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon has won the best international event award at the 2015 Running Awards, though much as we believe Dublin deserves  the honour, we are puzzled. Other awards were offered in categories including “well-being brand”, “protection product”, and “best compression brand” as well as the usual shoes, clothing, etc.  Plus there’s no mention of the race awards on the website (if indeed I got the right website). A bit too Siobhan Sharpe.

MATT BIDWELL set a new course  record of  31 mins 53 secs when winning the fourth annual “Run for Boylo” 10km in Foxford, Co Mayo. Norah Newcombe was first woman in 37 mins 2 secs.

JUST A FORTNIGHT AFTER  the Rotterdam Marathon, Sean Hehir  turned out for the annual RTE BHAA 5-Mile in Dublin’s Donnybrook. From the start of the race, he wasn’t too troubled and he came home with  well over a minute to spare in 24 min 53 secs. Second was Paul Fleming in 26 mins 35 secs, while third was Stephen Moore, both of them in the over 35 age group. Orna Dilworth of Bank of Ireland was first woman in 31 mins 12 secs, followed by Ilona McElroy and Florence Curley who was first over 40. After the race, the great Ann Woodlock, still racing in the over 75 age group, received the annual BHAA Person of the Year award.
