A record 15,016 have entered this year’s SSE Airtricity 36th Dublin Marathon taking place on Monday October 26. Numbers have been increasing steadily for the past five years and hit 14,600 in 2014.
When the race was launched in 1980, 1,420 finished, with Dick Hooper of Raheny Shamrock leading them home in 2 hrs 26 mins 14 secs and Cary May of Dundrum the first woman.
Last year’s winners were Eliud Too in 2 hrs 14 mins 47 secs and fellow Kenyan Esther Wanjiru Macharia who just held off the fast-finishing Maria McCambridge to finish first woman in 2:34.05. DSD’s McCambridge was second and first Irishwoman in 2:23.19. First Irishman was Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu in 2:21.01.
