Kelly Proper was named athlete of the meet at the Woodie’s DIY National Track and Filed Championships in Santry after adding the 100m title to the long jump and 200m she had won a day earlier.
Not even the drenching downpours could spoil a day of great performances. In the men’s 1500m, David McCarthy of Wets Waterford and Kilkenny’s Eoin Everard battled it out all the way to the line where a clearly delighted Everard snatched victory. No such drame in the women’s 1500m won from gun to tape by Laura Croew of Riocht in a fine solo run.
Newry’s Aislinn Crossey announced her arrival on the senior stage when she won the women’s 800m; Paul Robinson of St Coca’s took the men’s title and will next race at the World Championships. Winning the men’s 5000m was a revitalised Mark Christie of Mullingar Harriers who was kept company in the early stages by Michael Mulhare from Portlaoise.
A battle of wits in the junior 3000m saw Andrew Coscoran from Star of the Sea beating Mitchell Byrne of Rathfarn ham WSAF after Clonliffe’s Aaron Hanlon had made much of the early pace.
Starting the day off with her expected victory in the 100m hurdles was Sarah Lavin of Emerald; in the 40om hurdles, siblings Jessie and Thomas Barr made it a family double.
The sprint races had been close all weekend and in the men’s 100m David Hayes of Menapians just edged it from Steven Colvert of Crusaders.DSD had a 1-2 in the women’s 500m won by Jennifer “Pocket Rocket” Carey with Sinead Denny second and Shauna Cannon of Brothers Pearse a fighting third.
Most dominant athlete in the field events was Thomas Rauktys of Clonliffe. After winning the shot on Day 1 of the championships, he added a fourth national discus title to his collection and then for good measure won the 56lb for distance.
