Michael McKillop has taken a second gold at the Paralympic Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, winning the 1500m in 4:16.21. This is McKillop’s seventh world championship gold medal and his second of the week after his 800m win last Saturday.
In a hot and humid evening, McKillop turned on the speed just before the bell and finished almost five seconds clear of second placed Brad Scott of Australia.
Wheelchair racer John McCarthy, a familiar figure at Santry, was on the track shortly after McKillop in the T51 400m semi-finals. His time of 1:36.03 was the seventh fastest of the round saw him advance to the final where he finished 6th in 1:35.39. In total , the Irish team three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
