Leevale’s Ciaran O Lionaird has become the fourth Irish 1500m runner to make the A standards for the European Championships. O Lionaird went under the 3:39.30 he needed when he ran 3:37.72 at the BMC Watford last night.
Already under the mark are Paul Robinson of St Coca’s with 3:36.45, Donore’s John Travers with 3:37.27 and West Waterford’s David McCarthy with a 3:39.14 indoors from last February. Also in Watford, Eoin Everard of Kilkenny City Harriers ran 3:40.4, just outside his season’s best of 3:39.64 from the Morton Mile at Santry last week
All will now come down to the 150m at the Glo Health National Track and Field Championships in Santry this weekend, with the winner assured of a place on the Irish team for Zurich.
AT THE DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL 5km in Irishtown, Eoin O’Callaghan shook off the mid-race challenge of Paul Fleming to win in 15 mins 51 secs. Karl Fitzmaurice in third place was leading home a large group of runners from Revenue, all dressed smartly in blue. RATHFARNHAM’S Kevin Donagher won the Oldcastle 5km organsied by St Brigid’s AC last night. His time of 16 mins 30 secs put him seven seconds clear of Michael Gibson Brabazon of Mullingar Harriers with Paul Gannon of Dunboyne third. First woman was Fionna Gettings in 19 mins.
