John Coghlan and Catherina McKiernan were the winners at the New Year’s Day 5km, organised by Liffey Valley in Dublin’s Phoenix Park this afternoon.
On a day that turned out better than expected after early rain, Coghlan, going for a third successive victory, ran in tandem with Tomas FitzPatrick of Tallaght for much of the race, only making his break with the line in sight. His winning time of 14 mins 44 secs gave him a one second advantage on FitzPatrick. Donore’s Mark Dooley was third with Rory Kavanagh of Dunboyne fourth.
McKiernan was out on her own among the women, finishing 25th overall in 17 mins 26 secs. Fiona Roche was a fighting second in 17:42, with her Raheny team mate Annette Kealy third in 18.33. Raheny made it a team double, with Feidhlim Kelly, Donal Foley and Dermot Gorman making up a men’s team that beat Donore by just four points and Liffey Valley just a point behind again. Roche, Kealy and Helen Carr brought the women home as clear winners ahead of host club Liffey Valley, who beat Sportsworld on countback for second place.
A large group of over a hundred from the Lord Mayor’s 5 Alive Challenge added greatly to the day’s atmosphere, with the Lord Mayo Oisin Quinn leading by example and finishing in 26:40.Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com.
*David McCarthy of West Waterford was a runaway winner of the Bandon 5 in 23 mins 41 secs. Leevale’s Clare McSweeney was first woman in 29 mins 13 secs.
