John Coghlan and Maria McCambridge were the winners of the New Year’s Day 5km in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Coghlan, of the Metro club, clocked a time of 14 mins 34 secs, with Tomas Fitzpatrick of Tallaght just one second behind.
In the women’s race, McCambridge was chased hard by Raheny’s Fiona Roche winning in 16 mins 31 secs, with Roche four seconds behind.
* In Arizona, Eoin Keith became the first Irishman to run over 300 miles in the Across the Years 72-hour Ultra at Glendale, Phoenix, finishing second (as far as I know) behind last year’s winner Joe Fejes and winning himself the coveted gold buckle that goes to runners putting in more than 300 miles. Only four runners (including Fejes this year) have ever run more than 300 miles. Keith went through 200km in 22 hrs 45 secs and set a new Irish 48-hour record of over 340km along the way. World jogger Tony Mangan won this race twice, running 273 miles in 2005 and 279 miles in 2006.
