After winning the European title earlier this season, Rathfarnham’s Mark Ryan finished third at the World Masters Mountain running Championships in Telfes, Austria today. And not only that – on a great day for the Irish, Ryan combined with his Rathfarnham clubmates Paul Fleming and Peter O’Farrell to take team bronze, while in the M55 category, Martin McDonald of Ballyroan and District went two places better than last year when he took M55 bronze. Best of the Irish women was Karen Alexander, sixth W35
Ireland has a great record in this competition with Robin Bryson outstanding. He won the M40 title at Innsbruck in 2002, finishing 2nd a year later in Zell am Harmersbach, 2nd M45 in Bludenz Austria in 2007 and 10th M50 in Buhlertal, German in 2012.
Next year’s World Masters Championships take place almost next door – in Betys y Coed, Wales, on September 13.
FREDDY KERON SITTUK of Raheny and DSD’s Niamh Devlin were the winners of the Lakes 10km in Blessington.
GARY O’HANLON of Clonliffe won the Dingle Marathon – the best supported road race of the day.
JOHN BYRNE of Mayo and Ballina’s Norah Newcombe were the winners of the Charlestown 10km in Co Mayo. The race had almost 200 finishers – and was hand-timed…
