TRIATHLON: Karl Kildea of Muckno Tri Club won the sprint race at Attracta Doherty Triathlon, organised by Virginia Tri Club. Kildea finished just over the hour for a comfortable victory over Wicklow’s Dave Barry. Laura O’Driscoll, 11th overall, was first woman. After a bad crash during the cycle that closed the road, both sprint and Olympic races at the Brian Boru Triathlon in Killaloe were reduced to an aquathlon, with only the swim and run counting. Stephen Rooney, Shane Scully and Bjorn Ludick were the first three to finish the sprint race, while Anna Crooks was first woman, ahead of Jennifer Duffy and Andree Walkin. Cork veteran Trevor Woods was first home in the longer race, with Kate Fitzgerald best of the women. In Sligo, junior triathletes Con Doherty put in a commanding performance to win the sprint race in 55 minutes 13 seconds. Emma Jane Sharkey 13th overall, was first woman. Eamonn McAndrew won the Olympic distance race in just under two hours.
KICKBOXING: Katie Taylor isn’t the only Irish boxer winning gold. Last Saturday, Dubliner Barbara “The One” Delaney, from Fight Club Kickboxing, won her sixth full contact world title in London. Delaney jumped two weight divisions to take on Commonwealth champion Andree Warbrick from Cheltenham and beat her over ten hard fought rounds to become world WKMA 51.5kg pro champion. For the diminutive Delaney, who became Ireland’s first world pro kickboxing champion in 2007, it’s an unprecedented fourth title in eight months.
PARALYMPICS: Cyclist Cathal Miller has been selected as the flag bearer for the Irish team at the London 2012 Paralympic Games starting on August 29.
Miller was selected by a ballot of Irish Paralympic team athletes and follows Patrice Dockery, the six-times Paralympian, who lead out the Irish team in Beijing four years ago.
Miller, from Artane, Dublin, a veteran of the Beijing Games, will compete on the track in the 1km time trial and 4km individual pursuit and on the road in the time trial and road race. In 2011, Miller took World Cup bronze having finished fourth at the world championships a year earlier.
SNOOKER: Ronan Deegan won snooker’s final Griffith tour ranking event at D’Arcy McGee’s in Spawell, Dublin, beating Larry O’Dea who had knocked out Dan Carroll in the semi-finals to reach his first ever tour final. Annette Newman, who had lost in the quarter-finals to Carroll, had still done enough to take the overall title. Coming up is a prize tournament in Sharks Newbridge on Saturday September 8, while at the Ivy Rooms, Carlow, the Summer League resumes on Saturday and continues for five weeks.
ADVENTURE: Winning the Beast of Ballyhoura 36 hour adventure race was the Outfront/MSAI team of Paul Mahon, Peter Crommie, Moire O’Sullivan and Adrian Hennessy. They ran, cycled, paddled and orienteered their way around the 280km course that took in counties Cork, Limerick and Tipperary in 34 hours 25 minutes 20 seconds – comfortably inside the target. Also inside the target time were the Cam Racers who finished second in 35:40.57. A total of 25 teams completed the challenge.
