Mid-Week Round-Up: Proper, McCarthy Head Multievent Entry

Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper, who set a new Irish heptathlon record of 5,442 points in Italy last May is red-hot favourite to add the Irish women’s  multi-events title to her collection at Tullamore this weekend. Proper is in top form having won the 100m, 200m and long jump at the recent national championships in Santry and is much improved in the throws.

One to watch in the men’s decathlon is former international 400m/800m athlete, David McCarthy of La Cheile, who makes his multievent debut. McCarthy helped Kildare to their first National League Division 1 final last year, showing his ability in the sprints, hurdles and jumps, but is an unknown quantity when it comes to the throws and pole vault.

Leading the junior women’s entry are Vivian Fleischer  of  Celbridge  and KCH’s Catriona Twomey, while Shane Aston of Trim, a strong jumper and thrower, is favourite  to take the junior men’s title.

At youth level cousins Amy McTeggart and Niamh Quinn of Boyne , go head to head in the girls’ competition, while Mark Rogers of St Peter’s, who recently broke the  national octathlon youth record, takes on Cushinstown’s Keith Marks in the men’s contest.

* Proper warmed up for the weekend by posting a season’s best 23.49 for 200m at the final Dublin Graded League meet of the season in Santry.  She also won the long jump with a leap of 6.16; well below the 6.40 she jumped at Gent last weekend. MSB’s John Coghlan ran a very respectable  solo 8:06.46 to win the 3000m.  Also awarded were the Prosporteurope.com throws awards, with Tomas Rauktys of Clonliffe retaining his  discus award; details below.
