Despite windy conditions, Kerry O’Flaherty of Newcastle ran a personal best 9:51.64 to finish second in the women’s steeplechase at the Meeting Iberoamericano de Atletismo in Huelva, Spain yesterday.
Winning the race in 9:50.03 was Algerian athlete Amina Betiche. The time came just a few days after O’Flaherty ran 6:53.60 when winning the 2000m steeplechase for Windsor, Slough and Eton at last Saturday’s the UK Women’s League Premier Division round in Edinburgh.
Last Sunday, Sara Treacy of Dunboyne ran 9:50.10 for the 3000m steeplechase in Birmingham. Michelle Finn of Leevale currently tops the Irish rankings with a time of 9:49 set in Ordegem a few weeks ago. The Olympic qualification standard is 9:45.
