A victory for Darragh McElhinney from Bantry in the junior boys race proved the highlight of the SIAB Schools Cross-Country International hosted by Ireland in Santry. McElhinney’s time of 12 mins 52 secs put him comfortably clear of England’s Joshua Cowperthwaite who finished in 13 mins 1 secs. With Jack Moran ninth and Fathi Aden 10th, it also helped the Irish boys to team silver behind England.
Ireland also took team silver in the inter boys race, led home by James Edgar sixth and Eoin McCann ninth. Sarah Healy of Holy Child Killiney agonisingly missed out on a medal in the junior girls race where she finished fourth behind three English athletes. Ireland’s Olivia Nelson was tenth and the team third.
In the inter race, Caoimhe Harrington from Bantry finished 11th in a race completely dominated by the English with five in the top six. The Irish girls finished third team with Niamh Ni Chiadhra 13th Jodie McCann 18th and Siobhra O’Flaherty 21st.
