Round-Up: McCambridge 73:23 at Great Scottish Run. Too smashes Athlone 3/4 record

IMG_8039Maria McCambridge finished sixth in today’s Great Scottish Run in Glasgow with a time of 73 mins 23 secs.

That time – marginally faster than her 73 mins 28 secs from Charleville a few weeks ago –  puts her second on the current Irish rankings behind Fionnualla Britton McCormack, who ran 71 mins 33 secs in Lille last month. Lizzie Lee’s time of 73 mins 28  secs from the National Half Marathon puts her third,  and these three are almost three minutes clear of the chasers.

Two places ahead of  McCambridge, Jo Pavey set a new world record of 69 mins 58 secs  for women over 40.  Pavey finished just behind  Gemma Steel, who was third in 69 mins 56 secs.  Winner was  Edna Kiplagat in 68 mins 21 secs, with Doris Changeiywo 2nd  in 69 mins 50 secs.

Men’s winner was Moses Kipsiro in 62 mins 18 secs, followed by Scotland’s Callum Hawkins  62 mins 42 secs and Japheth Korir 63 mins 14 secs.

ELIUD TOO, who won the Dublin Marathon last year, pulverised the course record at the sixth annual Athlone Three-Quarter Marathon. His time of 1 hrs 40 mins 13 secs saw him finish a full twenty minutes ahead of Rathfarnham’s Brian Furey – who is no mean athlete.  Too is advised by  Kildare man Neil Fleming, better known as a canoeist and winner of  the Liffey Descent last week; Fleming works in the USA as a sports physiologist. Both men have links to the Le Cheile club.    In the women’s race, Pauline Curley’s time of 2:05.43 was the second fastest ever for the course – not bad for a W45 who (we think) is recovering from knee surgery. Linda Byrne of DSD ran 1:59.42 in 2011 and she remains the only woman to have broken two hours.

MARY CULLEN was first women at the Grange 10km in a fast time of 33 mins 48 secs. Finn Valley’s Teresa Doherty was second in 36:50.  Overall race winner was Richard Gorman in 32 mins 38 secs.

DAVID MANSFIELD, who is coached by Sergiu Ciobanu, was a clear winner of the Cork to Cobh 15-mile road race, organised by Cork BHAA.  Mansfield’s time of 81 mins 12 secs put him comfortably clear of Colin Merritt. Anne Marie Holland was first woman in 98 minutes.

LAURA GRAHAM, who is training for the SSE Airtricity Dublin marathon  won the RunHer 10km in Belfast in 36 mins 209 secs – a massive PB.

GEMMA REDDIN of Crusaders and Patrick MacGabhan of Dundrum South Dublin were the winners of a well-supported Dublin Novice Cross-Country Championships held in the Phoenix Park. The Crusaders women and the DSD men were the team winners.  Leevale’s Donal Coakley and Aoife Coakley of Youghal were the winners in the Cork Novice. In  Carndonagh, Fionualla Diver and Ciaran Doherty made it a Letterkenny double at the Donegal masters’ cross-country, and set down markers for the forthcoming masters international.
