Raheny’s Mark Kirwan proved the surprise winner of the 30th Patrick Bell/Nicky Phillips 5km in Bohermeen this evening.
His time of 14 mins 57 secs put him just five seconds clear of Annadale’s Paddy Hamilton, with Peter Brandon Somba, now running in Dunboyne colours, finishing third. First woman was Charlotte Kearney of Donadea Runners in 17 mins 41 secs.
Kirwan, who emigrated to Melbourne, Australia a number of years ago, has been in good form, running 14:31.70 for the 5000m last March in Melbourne – not far off his PB of 14:23.32 set a year earlier. That was followed by a 30:49.05 for 10,000m in Santry last summer and 2:23.17 at the Melbourne Marathon last October.
