Kenneally 7th in Great North Run; Robinson Wins Galway Kenya Mile

“Good performance competitively speaking. Time a little slower than hoped but weather wasn’t great. Onwards and upwards!” he tweeted after the race.

Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, running his first ever half marathon, outsprinted Britain’s Mo Farah for a thrilling victory in 60 mins 9 secs.

* Paul Robinson of St Coca’s ran a time of 3:57.98 to win the elite mile at the Galway Kenya Run at Dangan. This was a first ever sub-4-minute mile run in Galway. Ben St Lawrence from Australia was second in 3:59.58, with fellow Aussie Brett Robinson third in 4:08.53. Special guest David Rudisha guested in one of several 800m races run.  Along with his wife Lizzie and his coach Bro Colm  O’Connell, Rudisha has spent the last few days in Galway visiting schools, showing off his Olympic 800m medal,  and doing a great job of promoting athletics.

* Dunboyne’s Rory Kavanagh won the Ratoath 5km from his clubmate Loughlin Campion. Mary Hanley of Na Fianna was first woman.

* Luck went with the organisers of the annual Clifden Lifeboat 10km, a race by a regular described as “a hidden gem” despite a tough hill to negotiate on the Sky Road route. Despite predicitons of poor weather, the sky cleared in time, and from the off, the race was clearly between Galway supervet  Martin McEvilly of Roscahill and Ballyconeely’s Sean Nee. McEvilly took it in 40 mins 58 secs,  followed by Nee and Sean Mulkerrins from Carna. A clear winner of the women’s race was was Martha Linane fromGalway Triathlon Club in 47:32. In a strong team competititon, Ballyconneeely (Sean and Seamus Nee, Alan Keogh and Michael Diamond) won it for a fourth time, beating Lowery’s Bar (Donal O’Brien, Bernie O’Malley, Claire Mullen and Chris Nee).

* Just a week after finishing 7th at the World Aquathlon Championships in London, Leevale’s Lizzie Lee returned to the streets of Cork ,w here she was a clear winner of the Evening Echo Cork Women’s Mini Marathon 8km. Orla Drumm of Crusaders was second and Sinead O’Connor of Leevale third.
