Hyères: Fionnuala 4th, Lizzie 13th – and team a brilliant 3rd. Plus round-up

13 December 2015; The bronze medal winning Ireland Senior Women's team, top row from left, Caroline Crowley, Kerry O'Flaherty, Ciara Durkan, bottom row from left, Lizzie Lee, Fionnuala McCormack, and Michelle Finn. SPAR European Cross Country Championships Hyeres 2015. Paray Le Monial, France

Bronze medal winning Irish team – Caroline Crowley,Lizzie Lee,  Kerry O’Flaherty, Fionnula McCormack, Ciara Durkan, Michelle Finn.

Fionnuala McCormack of Kilcoole finished a fighting fourth in the Spar European  Cross-Country Championships in Hyeres.

With Leevale’s Lizzie Lee running a wonderfully consistent race to finish 13th, Caroline Crowley, a brilliant 23rd,  Ciara Durkan 43rd,  and the backing of Michele Finn and Kerry O’Flaherty, the team ended up with 83 points. That put them  comfortably clear of Spain, who had been lying third earlier in the race.

The race was won by the Ethiopian-born Sifan Hassan, who was running for the Netherlands. Gebre, an Ethiopian running in Spanish colours, attempted to stay with Hassan but ran badly out of steam midway through the race.

In the men’s race, Mick Clohisey finished 37th. Winner was the Kenyan Kaya running for Turkey; second was Bezebah, the Ethiopian who has served a two-year ban for doping. He was running in Spanish colours – and wearing “I Run Clean” on his number. First true European was Carvalho in 6th place running for  France. Spain was first team, with its team of Kenyans and Moroccans finishing 2nd 3rd, 4th, 5th. France was second.

Best of the Irish in the junior men’s race was Jack O’Leary who finished 23rd, passing a fading Kevin Mulcaire in the final stages of the race.  In the first ten minutes of the race, Mulcaire had looked comfortable in the leading pack, even briefly leading, but when defending champion Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy injected a burst of speed, he fell back rapidly.  Best of the Irish in the U23 men’s race was Brandon Hargreaves, who finished 31st. In the women’s races, Sophie Murphy finished 54th of the juniors and Shona Heaslip 33rd U23.

AT HOME, Gary Thornton from Galway won the Aware 10km held in very wet conditions at the Phoenix Park. He beat Brian Maher of Kilkenny and Rathfarnham’s Sean Hehir. First woman was  Sarah Mulligan of DSD. Winners of the Vodafone BHAA 5km cross-country in Marlay Park were DSD’s Killian Mooney and Orla Drumm of Crusaders. Philip Harty and former junior international race walker Kate Veale, both West Waterford,  were the winners of the Clean Zone Technology Paddy Joe Curran Memorial Turkey Trot 5-Mile (phew!), held in Dungarvan.
