World 50km champion Robert Heffernan from Togher finished second in the men’s mile walk at the Millrose Games in New York with a time of 5 mins 39.75 secs. Winner was Andreas Gustafsson from Sweden in 5:34.45.
Heffernan’s record of 15 indoors titles was equalled by Ferrybank’s Kelly Proper at the opening day of the Woodie’s DIY National Indoors in Athlonewhen she won the women’s long jump. Proper could go one better today – she is currently top ranked for the 200m. She isn’t running the 60m, where she is the defending champion both Amy Foster and Ailis McSweeney were disqualified in the final last year).
There’s an interesting entry for the women’s 1500m – DSD’s Claire Tarplee runs, along with her clubmates Siofra Cleirigh Buttner and Ella Fennelly.
Late drop-outs from the championships include Kevin English (who also dropped out of the 800m at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix) and Rose Anne Galligan, who were scheduled to run the 800m. Anyone aiming to make the Irish team at the World Indoors was expected to compete in Athlone this weekend.
*Pole vaulter Tori Pena’s 4.22m in Donetsk has moved her to the top of the Irish indoor rankings for this year. World Indoors standard is 4.71m. At the same meet, Renaud Lavillenie set an eye-popping new men’s indoor record of 6.16m, breaking Sergei Bubka’s 21-year-old record of 6.14m.
* At the Husky Track Classic in Seattle, Sean Tobin ran 3:59.91 for the mile – his first sub-4-minute time. Raheny’s Kevin Dooney running for Yale, finished second in the 3000m with a time of 8:14.41 at the annual Harvard Yalel Princeton meet at New Haven.
* Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon and Orna Dilworth of Sportsworld proved the class of the field at the Donadea 50km incorporating the National 50km Championships in Co Kildare. O’Hanlon was consitently the fastest on the 5km forest trail loop with his time of 2 hrs 59 mins 19 secs putting him 14 minutes ahead of West Waterford Raivis Zakis, who was running his first ultra. Dilworth had an even bigger margin of victory with her time of 3:43.16.
* Paul Grant and Colm Rooney were the winners of the Gardai BHAA Cross-Country races in the Phoenix Park, with decent weather and a healthy turn-out. Finishing 22nd in the “men’s” (open) race was Aoife Talty.
