Dundrum South Dublin made it a hat trick of wins in the premier division of the Woodie’s DIY National Track and Field League in Tullamore today.
DSD was chased hard all the way by Leevale, but victory in the final 4 x400m relay gave them a crucial nine points and sealed their third win in as many years. In the men’s premier division, Crusaders beat Leevale. Winning the Division 1 titles were the Wexford women and the Kildare men.
Highlights of a packed day of athletics included a closely fought men’s long jump with Leevale’s David Quilligan winning the premier division with a jump of 7.11m and Bandon’s David Cussen best in division 1 with a best of 7.03. Later in the afternoon, 17-year-old Cussen set a personal best of 2.13 when winning the high jump.
Ferrybank were aiming to win back the title they last won in 2010 and Cara Kennedy opened their account with victory in the premier division hammer, throwing 50.71m. All -rounder Kelly Proper also picked up valuable points, winning the 100m hurdles and the long jump.
For DSD, Gabrielle Coveney won the premier 400m hurdles, with Ferrybank’s Jessie Barr not competing. Busiest member of the DSD team proved to be the “pocket rocket” Jen Carey, who won the 200 and anchored both relays teams as well as finishing third in the 100m. After a hectic two months in Ireland, Carey now returns to her home base in California for a well earned rest. Others picking up maximum points for DSD included Anita Fitzgibbon, who won the javelin despite a bad case of food poisoning, Sinead Denny 400m, Grace O’Rourke high jump and Grainne Moggan with a PB 10.79 in the triple jump.
Keeping in touch all the way were Leevale, with Ailis McSweeney winning the 100m, Michelle Finn the 1500m, Niamh Murphy the shot and discus and a delighted Louise Shanahan snatching 800m victory on the line from Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD.
For Crusaders, Conor McCullough picked up nine points for his club with a throw of 67.80 and also won the discus with national champion Tomas Rauktys of Clonliffe absent through injury. From the start, the talented Crusaders squad, assembled from all over the country, looked the team to beat for the premiership title. Victories for Steven Colvert in the sprints, Jason Harvey in the hurdles, Ray Hynes in the steeplechase, and the two relay teams sealed their victory.
Leevale picked up maximum points in the walk, won by Luke Hickey, the shot putt and the 56lb for distance won by Dave Tierney and the long jump thanks to David Quilligan. Defending champions Clonliffe with a much weakened team still finished a fighting third with Brian Gregan winning the 400m and Dave Donegan the pole vault.
Other fine performances came from David Cussen of Bandon who won the division 1 long jump with 7.03 and then took the high jump with a personal best 2.13, John Travers who finished second in the steeplechase for Donore and then won the division 1500m; Sligo’s Emmett Dunleavy a clear winner of the division 1 5000m; David McCarthy of Kildare who won the 400m hurdles; comeback kid Brona Furlong winner of the division 1 800m for Wexford and Ann Marie McGlynn (formerly Larkin) of Tir Chonaill winner of the 3000m division 1 race after six years away from the sport.
