Euro Juniors: Relay women just miss out. SIAB Schools: Irish 2nd

IMG_6419Ireland just missed out on a medal in the women’s 4 x 100m relay at the European Junior Track and Field Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Only a lunging dip by the French anchor woman gave them bronze ahead of Ireland. The Irish time of 45.38 seconds was still a national junior record, improving on the 45.66 seconds time they had run in the heats earlier in the day.

In the men’s 4x100m, the Irish men, who had qualified as fastest losers, finished seventh in 41.09 seconds. In the heats, they had run a faster time of 60.97 seconds. Of the thirteen teams in the two heats, only nine had finished.

Women: 4×100 – Ht 2: 2 Ireland 45.66 (Q; NJR) – 5th fastest. Final: 1 GB 44.18, 2 Poland 45.28, 3 France 45.35, 4 Ireland 45.38 (NJR).

Men: 4 x 100m – Ht 4: Ireland 40.97 (q). Final: 1 Sweden 39.73, 2 Poland 40.00, 3 France 40.02….7 Ireland 41.09.

AT THE ANNUAL SIAB Schools international in Grangemouth, Scotland, both boys and girls Irish teams finished second with the highlight of the day a first ever win by the 4 x 100m relay girls. Other Irish winners included Kevin McGrath boys’ 800m, Molly Scott girls’ 100m hurdles,  Ryan Carthy-Walsh  high jump, and javelin throwers Fergus Cox and Orlaith O’Brien.
