Gary O’Hanlon and Ian Guiden made it a Clonliffe double at the Longwood 10k/5k in Co Meath today.
O’Hanlon, who runs in next Sunday’s SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon, won the 10k, beating Raheny’s Cillian O’Leary and Brian McCluskey of North East Runners. In the 5km, Guiden was a clear winner ahead of Mullingar’s Andrew Nevin. Una Britton of Kilcoole was first woman in the 10k, while Mary Hanley was first women in the 5k.
ANNADALE’S Paul Pollock ran a time of 48 mins 21 secs for fourth place at the Great South 10 mile race in Portsmouth, England. Race winner was Chris Thompson of Aldershot, Farnham and District in 47 mins 23 secs; he was followed by Andy Vernon 48.09 and Matt Sharp 48.18. Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 52:49.
GLASLOUGH’S Conor Duffy and Rebecca Henderson were the winners of the Bobby Rea Cross-Country – the opening round of the Northern Ireland and Ulster Cross-Country League. In the women’s race, over 5km, Henderson put in a classy performance who come home first in 19 mins 6 secs, with North Down’s Rachel Gibson second and Amy Bulman of Willowfield Harriers third.
Duffy proved the class of the field in the men’s 8km race, with his time of 26 mins 46 secs putting him comfortably clear of Newcastle pair Seamus Lynch and David O’Flaherty, with Andrew Annett of North Belfast Harriers a close fourth.
VETERAN ultra runner Eddie Gallen proved best of the Irish at the European 24-Hour Championships in Albi, France. Gallen finished 25th with a total of 225,564km. One place behind was Aidan Hogan, in only his second ever ultra, with 222.453 km.
Amy Masner, the only Irish woman competing, was 17th of the 77 women competing with 215,310 km. Next was Daragh O’Loughlin with 205.984km; then Eoin Keith, only weeks after the Spartathlon, who completed 196.835km in 20 hours 40 minutes and John O’Regan with 161.443km in 19 hours 22 minutes.
The Irish team of Gallen, Hogan and O’Loughlin finished ninth of the 18 teams.
