Sarah Mulligan of DSD, running the distance for the first time, was a clear winner of the women’s race at the National Half Marathon, held in conjunction with the Rock ‘n’ Roll extravaganza today.
Mulligan ran 76 mins 2 secs for the tough and hilly course that started at The Point in Dublin’s Docklands and then headed for the Phoenix Park. Her victory came just after the announcement that she had been selected for the European Marathon Cup in Zurich along with Fionnuala Britton and Barbara Sanchez. Finishing second was Ailish Malone of Clonliffe with Norah Newcombe of Mayo third.
Overall winner of the race was British international marathon runner Scott Overall in 65 mins 19 secs. First Irish finisher and so Irish champion was Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock who ran a tremendous race to finish third in 65 mins 54 secs. Second local athlete was his Raheny clubmate Freddy Keron Sittuk, who had run the steeplechase at the National League finals a day earlier. In third place was Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu. Raheny Shamrock made a clean sweep of the seniro, M35, and M50 men’s team titles; Sportsworld were first of the senior women, with Donreo first over 35 and Mayo best over 50. And that’s all we have folks – apparently there were about 800 club runners among the 7,000 or so RnR finishers.
As for the DLR Bay 10km, Conor Dooney of Raheny Shamrock was first home, with DSD’s Michelle McGee was first woman.
