Mayo’s John Byrne led home almost 900 finishers at the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon today. Byrne’s time of 71.mins 39 secs put him over a minute clear of the field led by Peter Mooney of the Marathon Club of Ireland.
Finishing 11th and first woman in 75 mins 21 secs was Maria McCambridge of Dundrum South Dublin, who is building up quite a winning streak at the moment. Second was Raheny veteran Annette Kealy who clocked a fine time of 79 mins 10 secs.
A total of 81 finished the marathon, all but 19 of them members of the Marathon Club of Ireland. Brendan Ryan in just under 3 hrs 2 minutes was first home,with Olwyn Dunne first woman.
* Freddy Keron Sittuk travelled to Wexford last night where he set a new men’s record of 30 mins 54 secs at the Kilmore 10km. SBR’s Tom Hogan was over a minute behind in second place. First woman was local athlete Jackie Carty in 36 mins 43 secs; her clubmate Fiona Kehoe was second.
* Laura Crowe of Riocht finished eighth in a closely fought women’s mile at the Great North City Games in Newcastle. Crowe’s time of 4 mins 38.36 secs put her less than five seconds behind the winner Morgan Uceny of the USA who finished in 4:33.97.
* Michael Mulhare of Portlaoise was a runaway winner of the Kill GAA 10km, clocking an excellent time of 29 mins 45 secs for the hilly course. Annadale’s Paddy Hamilton finished a minute behind for second; Paul Campbell was third. Michelle Cox of Newbridge was first woman.
* Riocht’s Niamh O’Sullivan now in the over 50 age group, was a clear winner of the Killarney Women’s 10km Mini Marathon in 37 mins 11 secs. Over 600 finished.
* London-based Mayo native Henry Hughes had the distinction of leading home 104 finishers at the inaugural Parkrun 5km in Westport. First women was Ciara Kelleher.
